Domino Fuel Reminds Long Island Families to Apply for Essential Heating Assistance Programs
The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) helps low-income Long Islanders pay the cost of heating their homes. If you are eligible, you may receive one regular HEAP benefit per season and could also be eligible for an emergency HEAP benefit if you are in impending danger of running out of fuel or having your utility service shut off. The application period normally begins in early to mid-November and continues into the winter, until funding for the program runs out.

Domino Fuel is a NYS vendor serving Suffolk and Nassau Counties, Queens and the five boroughs, and can assist Long Island residents with application for all available HEAP services, including heating assistance, emergency benefits, heating equipment repair, clean and tune, and cooling assistance.

“As winter approaches, the importance of keeping Long Island homes warm cannot be overstated. The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is a vital resource for low-income families, and we want our community to know that Domino Fuel is here to assist them in this process. Eligible residents may not only receive a regular HEAP benefit but could also qualify for emergency benefits if they’re at risk of running out of fuel or having their utilities shut off. As a New York State vendor, we’re proud to facilitate applications for all HEAP services, including emergency benefits and heating equipment repair. Don’t wait; the application period usually begins in early to mid-November and continues until funds are exhausted,” said Michael Roberts, a manager at Domino Fuel.

Regular benefits under Heating Assistance component will operate from 11/1/2023 through 3/15/2024 or until funding allocated to this program is exhausted, whichever comes first. Benefits under the regular component may be extended beyond the proposed 3/15/2024 closing date if New York State receives additional funding.

Emergency benefits under Crisis Assistance will operate from 1/2/2024 through 3/15/2024. New York State will operate a Heating Equipment Repair and Replacement component under Crisis Assistance from 10/02/2023 until 9/30/2024, or until funding allocated to this component is exhausted, whichever comes first. New York State will operate a Clean and Tune benefit under Heating Assistance from 10/02/2023 and to close on 09/30/2024, or until funding allocated to this program is exhausted, whichever comes first. New York State will operate a Cooling Assistance component from 4/15/2024 until 8/30/2024, or until funding allocated to this component is exhausted, whichever comes first.

Eligibility and benefits are based on:

• income

• household size

• the primary heating source

• the presence of a household member who is under age 6, age 60 or older or permanently disabled.

Who qualifies for help?

LIHEAP/Heating Assistance eligibility is determined by annual income and how many people are in the household. The program is available to homeowners and renters – even those living in non-subsidized housing with heat included in the rent. Regular benefits for households that pay directly for heat based on actual usage are paid directly to the vendor that supplies the household’s primary source of heat.
