A California-based organic beauty company recently announced its winner for an annual scholarship program given to college students. The awardee is Annegret Jannasch, a Ph.D. student from the University of Arkansas.

San Diego, California – June 11, 2021 – The Organic Bunny Scholarship for the academic year 2020-2021 has chosen its $1,000 financial grant awardee. Coming from the University of Arkansas, Annegret Jannasch is a current Ph.D. student continuing her education with a degree in Food Science. Annegret will be receiving her award in the coming fall semester in 2021.

It is without a doubt that pursuing a college degree can make an impact on someone’s life. Finishing a higher education degree opens up many opportunities for in-demand jobs, business ventures, and networks that can raise one’s income and quality of living. However, not all students will get the opportunity to finish college. As the country is just coming out of the pandemic, as many as 400,000 students opted out of pursuing a higher education degree.

Organic Bunny is all about creating a positive impact. As a company that provides cruelty-free, non-toxic yet beautiful self-care products, Organic Bunny believes that there is power in education to make a positive change in communities one student at a time. This is one of the main reasons why the company established the Organic Bunny Scholarship, which is aimed to help financially struggling yet deserving students pay for college expenses.

2020-2021 student applicants were asked to submit a 500-word essay with the prompt: “What is your major, and how do you plan to use it to make your impact on the world?”

The recent scholarship program winner, Annegret Jannasch, embodied the values of innovation and impact that the organic company upholds. In her entry essay, she talked about how her degree can help create an impact on reducing world hunger while improving food sustainability:

“I am highly enthusiastic about the development and innovation of food products that contribute to human well-being, reducing world hunger, and sustainability in the food production chain,” she wrote.

Annegret also wants to use her knowledge and expertise in food fortification to help improve the nutrition of some basic goods such as rice. Recently, Annegret conducted research on the fortification of rice to reduce the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies.

“During my master’s program, I conducted research in the area of rice fortification to help alleviate micronutrient deficiencies worldwide. The goal of this research was to improve the nutrient content of rice by using a sustainable parboiling technology that uses only half of the amount of water that is traditionally used in parboiling,” she remarked.

“Because this innovative fortification method was highly successful, I am currently working together with professors and partners from a rice parboiling plant in Burkina Faso to implement the fortification process in a country where the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies is high and thus causes multiple diseases and a large number of deaths,” added Annegret.

As Annegret finishes her degree, she hopes to help people who suffer from nutrient deficiencies through innovations in food properties.

“In my future career, I am hoping to combine my knowledge about food fortification and satiating properties of food to develop products that can help both, people who suffer from hidden hunger as a result of nutrient deficiency and people whose lives are compromised due to obesity,” she concluded.
